Mulan loves everything dinosaurs. In her recent parent-teacher conference, her teachers pointed out that we could work more with her on shapes. So, I combined this learning objective with her interest and language all in one to help her learn shapes. I also thought that it would be a good idea to make this a coloring book since she also likes to color these days.
Mulan had a lot of fun doing this activity. It required little supervision from me since she is pretty good at matching the shapes of the dinos with the pictures. Whenever she struggles to name the shape of the dino, I will tell her what the shape is and ask her to repeat after me. I also think that it is important to help her get familiar with the “shapes” of Chinese characters since she only sees them while reading books. I will point while pronouncing each character out loud. Mulan is not writing yet, but she is starting to scribble and then tells me she wrote her name 🙂 Maybe after some time she will start scribbling in Chinese…?
I am focusing on eleven shapes for Mulan to learn (square, rectangle, triangle, circle, oval, diamond, star, heart, pentagon, hexagon, octagon) and these coloring pages cover all these shapes. It is nice that there are 30 pages of them since I can give her a few pages at a time and pull out more if she wants to keep going. It is so cute to see her get excited about dinosaurs too!
